We need to talk about... Dynamics 365 Customer Insight Journeys ... Release Wave 1 for 2026

Today in my series on the changes we can expect to see as part of Release Wave 1 for 2026, Dynamics 365 Customer Insights Journeys is next. I will take a look at what's actually involved in this release for our Customer Service implementations.

This wave is about giving the people managing and delivering that service better tools to do it: smarter quality control, safer AI deployment, more proactive insight into how customers are feeling, and forecasting that actually works.

Boost engagement with Copilot-powered conversational text messages

Text messaging remains one of the most effective customer engagement channels due to its high open and response rates, but traditional SMS interactions often limit customers to simple keyword responses. By integrating Dynamics 365 Contact Center with Copilot Studio agents, organisations can now deliver intelligent, conversational SMS experiences that allow customers to communicate naturally and receive more personalised support.

Businesses can incorporate AI-driven text conversations into customer journeys, leverage existing consent and audience management settings, track detailed engagement outcomes, and use Microsoft Fabric for advanced reporting and insights. For example, a financial services provider can move beyond basic fraud confirmation messages and engage customers in meaningful conversations that gather information, provide guidance, and improve service outcomes in real time.

AI Agents Doing the Heavy Lifting

The headline theme of this release is agents taking on real work rather than just offering suggestions. The new Journey Creation Agent can put together a customer journey in minutes based on a simple brief, taking away a lot of the blank-page problem marketers face when starting a new campaign.

Alongside it sits the Outreach Optimization Agent, which looks at engagement patterns and adjusts message timing automatically, aiming to reach customers when they are actually likely to respond rather than on a fixed schedule.

For organisations running several agents and Copilot experiences across their Dynamics 365 estate, a new Dynamics 365 AI Hub gives administrators one place to govern and oversee them centrally, which should make the AI side of the platform easier to manage as it grows.

Making Every Touchpoint Feel Personal

A major part of this release focuses on the everyday details that make communications feel tailored rather than generic. Advanced personalisation now supports simple formulas to adjust text, dates, and numbers within messages, so content can adapt automatically to who is reading it.

Emails can now update themselves with the latest content automatically, which is handy for anything time-sensitive like pricing or availability, and organisations can set message expirations so an offer or update doesn't linger in someone's inbox looking stale after it's no longer relevant.

There's also a new query editor for directly editing and viewing segment definitions, giving marketers finer control over exactly who ends up in an audience, and the ability to build audiences from marketing website interactions, so what a customer does on your website can now shape the journeys they receive.

Branded content links are also on the way, adding a layer of trust and consistency to the links customers click through from a campaign.

Turning Journeys Into Pipeline

The final feature looks to combine marketing activity directly back to sales pipeline. Customer journeys can now automatically create leads and other records as customers move through them, closing the gap between someone engaging with a campaign and that engagement being captured as a genuine sales opportunity.

This handoff between marketing and sales has traditionally needed manual processes or custom integration work, so seeing it built into the journey experience itself is a welcome simplification for teams trying to move faster on qualified interest.

Summary

The 2026 Release Wave 1 update for Customer Insights Journeys shows Microsoft introducing more agentic AI, handing real, repeatable tasks like journey creation and send-time optimisation over to autonomous agents, while also polishing the day-to-day personalisation tools marketers rely on to keep communications relevant and on-brand.
